About Us

Joy Kinney, MSR, CCC-SLP, is the founder and owner of Speech-Language Pathology Associates of South Carolina, LLC. A licensed Speech-Language Pathologist, she specializes in treating adults with neurological disorders, including communication, swallowing, and cognitive challenges related to traumatic brain injury, stroke, and other conditions affecting the brain.

Joy has presented nationally and regionally on topics related to cognitive rehabilitation and mild traumatic brain injury. At the 2021 American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Convention, she shared her work on “Rising United: The Mission Essential Task of Cognitive Rehabilitation for Combat Veterans.” In 2022, she received the Frank R. Kleffner Clinical Career Award from the South Carolina Speech-Language-Hearing Association, recognizing her leadership and innovation in the field. She also served as a mainstage speaker at the Head2Speech Interprofessional Summit, presenting “When My Patient Seems Normal,” which explored strategies for evaluating and treating subtle symptoms of mild TBI.

Beyond her clinical work, Joy is an active volunteer with the Columbia Parkinson’s Support Group and a proud member of ASHA and the Brain Injury Association of South Carolina. She is fully licensed to practice in South Carolina and Florida and holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology from ASHA.

Joy earned her Master of Science in Rehabilitation Studies with an emphasis in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2005, and her Bachelor of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology from Columbia College of South Carolina in 2003.

Tim Kinney, Owner of SLP Associates of SC

Timothy Kinney is the co-owner of Speech-Language Pathology Associates of South Carolina, LLC. He works full-time at the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services, as the Director of the Division of Compliance and Customer Support. He is a graduate of the Leadership Excellence and Achievement Program (LEAP) and is the 2022 Recipient of the LEAP Character Award. He is a 2005 graduate of Erskine College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Behavioral Science.

Twix was rescued from Lexington County Animal Services in 2020, and she is a five-year-old mixed breed with a gentle spirit and a quiet connection. She’s currently working toward her therapy dog certification with Dog Training Elite Midlands SC. Once certified, Twix will offer emotional support and assist with communication retraining for individuals recovering from stroke or traumatic brain injury—bringing comfort, motivation, and a few tail wags along the way.
